This time we're doing things a bit differently and hiking up a different face of the mountain. In addition, the hike will take place Saturday instead of Sunday, and on Saturday night we're having a barbecue party. For full details, click the title of this post.

Schedule
The bus will depart The Foreigner's Club Saturday Oct. 6 at 6 a.m. SHARP!

We'll arrive at the park about three hours later, and begin the hike on Jirisan by 10 a.m. at an elevation of around 1,000 meters.

There will be two trails to chose from. The first course is via a park road past Nogodan shelter, to Nogodan Altar and a wooden staircase up to Nogodan Mountain at an elevation just over 1,500 meters (at 9.6 km of trail total). This course can be extended into part of the second course for extra walking if you want.

The second course is via a park road and two stone step trails — past Nogodan Shelter to Nogodan Altar along the Jirisan ridge trail to Banya Bong Mountain, at an elevation of about 1,732 meters. This trail is 16 km long and a maximum time of 7 hours to hike.

Saturday night the bus will take our weary souls (and soles) to the hotel where the staff has planned an outdoor barbecue and where we'll drink beer and participate in hash ceremonies.

Sunday morning may include a visit to the nearby “Great Hwa Om Sah Temple.” The bus will return to Okpo on Sunday Oct. 7 at around 3 p.m.

Due to changes in our accommodations, the cost this year will be 100,000 won per adult. Children are free. This price includes cost of the bus, park fees, accommodations, beverages, and the barbecue dinner.

Space is limited to 40 people. Please reserve your space no later than Sept. 27 by giving your payment to any member of the Hash committee. Please indicate when paying if you would like to room with someone in particular and we will make the best effort to pair you with your choice.

Items we recommend you bring (it's your choice but be smart)

For the Hash, Saturday Oct. 6 — travel as light as you can

Rucksack to carry all your kit.

Pair of walking boots, preferably with ankle support, and thick walking socks.

Wear loose, comfortable walking clothes.

A spare long sleeve shirt or sweat shirt

Lightweight raincoat if rain is forecast — useful on top of the peak

Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm

Sweat bands, sweat towel, gloves

Knee supports & ankle support optional — can purchase in a chemist or sports shop.(An ankle support in your rucksack is handy in case of a slip.)

Walking pole/ stick (1 or 2 poles)

Small whistle (for emergency)

Water!

For the long trail and a steady walker, 1.5 litres of water is adequate plus ½ litre of water for an emergency and the return leg from Banya Bong Peak. There are 2 water stops on route, at Nogodan Shelter and at Imkeolryeong.

The short trail option ½ to 1 litre (1 water stop on route at Nogodan shelter.)

Packed lunch and snacks (For snacks, bring sugar, such as chocolate or citrus fruit, and salt, such as nuts, trail mix. There is a new sign-up sheet in the club and almost all the slots are empty! Most importantly, we need a cook for the next hash, September 23.

If you're nervous about laying trail or cooking for a large group of people, don't worry. There are plenty of seasoned hashers who can help you plan and organize. It was described as a child friendly hash and promised to be one to remember. It was certainly that. Also for 10,000 won it had to be the bargain of the year considering it also included three hours on a coach, the chance of a tour around Oek Cheon Sa temple complex and a Korean meal.

Let’s be fair you could have spent the money on a beer and a half in an OKPO bar but then you wouldn’t have had the pleasure of seeing grown men cry. The moans and groans of the walking wounded as they emerged from the sauna, normally described as a forest, would have bought tears to most peoples eyes. Even the old Hash Hack survived this “child friendly” hash, if only to bring you his first hand report directly from the front, (or the back as it turned out).

A huddle of female hashers (fashers?) were heard to say, “Typical men, always complaining, we women just take the pain and get on with it.”

With gasping breaths, hearts pounding and legs hardly able to support their tired bodies, the hashers staggered toward the waiting coaches and collapsed on the first thing which resembled a seat. Then silence. “Excellent” said Wolfie, “This is always the signs of a good hash…. I love to see pain”

So what kind of child would have found that friendly? Well to be fair a few children did manage to complete the course if only to confirm that they had a future in the Special Forces. For the full story, click the title of this post.

It had started well. In the clubhouse maps were handed out and as the hashers studied their options of three routes, they were given good advice on survival by Wolfie. Of course most seasoned hashers know Wolfie can survive in the bush for days living off leaves and worms. “You will need about ten litres of water each” he suggested “then some for the second half.” Of course everyone thought he was joking. Surely it couldn’t be as tough as that.

The hashers looked relaxed though as they lounged in the clubhouse seats and enjoyed their last cigarette whilst talking of previous tough expeditions. Little did they know….!

And so the intrepid bunch set off into the unknown. After a short while there was the first of many calls of nature. It was a good chance to stretch legs and re-hydrate. Wolfie took control and after inviting the ten hash virgins to the front he gave his instructions of how to survive this <strike>assault course</strike> hike, which seemed to be straight out of an SAS training manual. "Don’t urinate — you’ll need to save all your body fluids, plus it’s a hash crime” he cautioned.

Finally, there were shouts of “ON-ON” and the hashers started the long uphill climb into the unknown. The small talk and laughter soon stopped as the heat and humidity took its toll. Sights of so called “experienced” hashers hanging onto trees and gasping for air was just too much.

That young whippersnapper Irish Terrier did manage at least one smile for the camera, or was it wind?
